Season 5, Episode 19.5 Josh Zelikovitz of Star Trek and the Jews

This week, Josh Zelikovitz of Star Trek and the Jews joins the show to talk about Jews and Judaism in the Star Trek franchise. So many of the actors, writer, and creators behind Star Trek have been Jewish and yet Trek has never featured an explicitly Jewish character. On the show, we talk about depicting religion in a secular future, the Jewish coding of Trek elements, Gene Roddenberry’s strained relationship with Jews and faith, the Jewish creators behind classic and modern Trek, how Bajorans are the Swiss Army knife of depicting oppression, B’Elanna as a secular Jew on Voyager, “Jackie Marks”, Ashkenormativity, and yes, the Ferengi.
